UNIT 4 - 'GREEN' & SUSTAINABLE BUILDING DESIGN
Green Architecture has been around for many, many years as has the electric car. However, because both of those ideas reduce the consumption of fossil fuels that would also reduce huge profits for large corporations, the evolution of technology and inclusion in the marketplace has been slow. However, recent needs to address environmental issues and resulting demand for 'green' products & energy, has created movement towards adopting and mandating 'Green' & Sustainable practices for the Built Environment .
It is becoming more common that Architects, Designers, Engineers and Manufacturers are being mandated to meet certain requirements for a buildings efficiency, such as LEED certification. Local insulation codes, glazing restrictions and efficiency of heating and cooling systems are now closely regulated to avoid energy waste and minimize consumption. We will also explore the many other advantages to designing green that go beyond the building such as benefits to the human & natural surroundings.
ASSIGNMENT 1 - 'GREEN' DESIGN
Green Design can be as simple as choosing the types of materials, utilizing passive methods of heating & cooling or integrating plant life into a buildings environment, to whole systems of re-use, re-purpose & recycling natural and manmade resources and waste.

in the design development process
Consider these questions and give a brief explanation as to how you will approach your design for each.
1. What are you going to do with the natural light that you design to come into the building? On the outside of the building?
2. What are you going to do with any water you passively collect?
3. How are natural elements, materials, plant life, etc. is included in your design and what 'role' will they play in the building?
DUE - 10/17/22
ASSIGNMENT 2 - SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Considering Sustainability can greatly affect the criteria for selecting a site, developing a program and approaching the design of your building. Not only its impact on the site during construction but also its impact for the life of the building. In developing the program and design, identify LEED standards that are going to be addressed and achieved in your design.
Study the program of your project using what you have learned in previous units and think about how you will apply information in this unit to developing the design of your project.
Before you begin, consider these questions and give a brief explanation as to how you will approach your design for each.
1. List 3 design considerations you are making for LEED?
2. How will you integrate 'green systems' into your design?
3. List 3 things you are going to include in your building design that will contribute to its Sustainability.
4. What are your plans for manmade waste?
