UNIT 2 - 2D DRAWINGS & TEMPLATES

Everything you see in the Built Environment started as an idea, imagined and designed and developed into plans for building or manufacturing products or parts.

For many objects, a 2d Template drawing is created to provide the builder or manufacturer a pattern to transform an idea into an actual product or a part.

In fact, before computer aided drawings & 3d modeling & manufacturing, 2d templates were drawn at full size and used as patterns for parts on automobiles, airplanes, boats and many other products.

Today, 2d template drawings are still used for making 'flat' objects and objects that can be made from a single piece of material. They are also used in many phases of designing & manufacturing in industries such as clothing and apparel, shipping and packaging, mechanical HVAC systems, construction and architectural paneling etc.

ASSIGNMENT 1 - TEMPLATE DRAWING

Draw by hand, to a scale, a 2d Top view of a template for the box shown that is 6" Deep and 1.5" Wide and 3" Long. Include all sides and the top and bottom in the template and other 'flap' or tabs needed  to assemble.
Draw your template as if it folds upward from the inside.
Use dashed lines to show where the folds are.

This can be done freehand or using a straight edge on  the 8-1/2x11 grid paper provided. The template should be at a scale to fill as much as the paper as possible so you minimize waste and be designed to minimize the labor to cut out the template. Indicate the drawing scale...for example, # of squares = 1 inch.
